In 2011 nearly 260 million tonnes of bauxite was produced world wide. The majority of this material was consumed in-country for the production of smelter grade alumna.
The one outlier in this respect is Indonesia which, with no domestic alumina industry, exports its production. China, and particular the merchant refineries in Shandong are the destination for most of Indonesia’s exports. This situation has potential to change as Indonesia’s government intends to enforce an export ban commencing 2014.
